Hello,
I recently discovered Vintage Thingie Thursday via fellow blogger, Becky, who turns out to be located fairly close by, geographically. I hope to be able to meet her in person someday for a day of antiquing. I love vintage items. It's fun to look at something that has been around for a long time and think about all the times that people have used the item and how it was part of their lives in days gone by.
My theme for today is aluminum. Both these items were used by my mother the whole time I was growing up. She is the type of person who takes great care of her things and does not buy new ones unless absolutely necessary. She passed them along to me years ago only because she wasn't using them anymore and realized they were still perfectly useful.
Both of these are stamped on the bottom with the company logo and the words "COMET The Popular ALUMINUM Made in the USA." They are at least fifty years old, probably more like 60!
Here is the first one, a cake saver.
Here it is still in use! The cake turned out to be very delicious...Blueberry Lemon Crumb Cake. I will be sharing the recipe in an upcoming post!
This next one is an egg poacher. My mom used this a lot, so much neater than poaching eggs directly in the boiling water and no waste!
This is the best shot I could get of the logo imprinted on the bottom, after all it is a bit faded by now!!
I have really enjoyed doing this post and can't wait to visit everyone's blogs today to read about, and look at, all the great vintage items. This week's Vintage Thingie Thursday posts can be found here at Suzanne's blog The Colorado Lady.
Peace and Love,
Stephanie
Hey that's great steph..something from your parents always add sentimental value...I've got few things from my mum and I look after them, the way I look after my babies...
ReplyDeleteThis type kitchen wear takes me back to a home that no longer exists. We had things just like this. I have a few pieces left, but not many. I really enjoyed going back in time with you today.
ReplyDeleteYou brought back a lot of very old memories today. My family used these things for years. We had some of all of them. I really enjoyed you post taking me back in time.
ReplyDeleteThe cake server is an attractive design, and I like the way the word CAKE is embossed on it. It looks like it could be used for a lot of things besides cake.
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI've seen the cake pans around. I've got one of those egg poachers. And it is much better that putting it into water. Have a great day!

OH NO! I have that exact cake carrier! Hubby kept it from when his dear mother passed on - and I use it still today! When not in use, its a great display item on top of my kitchen cabinets!!! We're re-doing the kitchen now - hubby is making new cabinet doors, which I hope will be finished soon....but we still have to choose a counter top, paint for walls and cabinet sides - and find a sink too! But it will show off my trasures so well once it is all completed!
ReplyDeleteLove your aluminum! I still bake muffins in my Comet muffin pans. Yummy looking blueberry crumb cake!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love both!! Happy Thursday.

Howdy Neighbor! I'm up the road, in southwest VA and visiting via Vintage Thursday. Love your egg poacher, so practical and useful. I think I've got a cake holder like yours and it's in use...too much, if ya know what I mean!
ReplyDeleteCome for Sheep Shearing, April 10, details on my blog.
I love that cake saver! And I'll bet that egg poacher does a great job- all of my really old pans like that are my favorite and my best pans!
ReplyDeleteI love those aluminum Comet pots and pans! Wonderful that your Mom not only kept yours in such great shape but that she gave them to you to use!
ReplyDeleteWe shall go a-thrifting soon!
Hi Stephanie,
ReplyDeleteYour vintage cake saver is lovely and the cake looks really yummy. I have an egg poacher, but mine is only 32 years old hardly vintage. Welcome to vintage Thursdays.
Oh, I love that cake carrier! I have two of them but they are shiny & square! I'd love to find a round one!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Vintage Thingies Thursday!!! What a great first post...I am just really having a fit over that cake saver! I have been keeping an eye out for one for a while now...and boy this one is a beauty! Maybe one day, I will come across one I like and can get it at a fair price...I love the style and design of yours! Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great cake plate. I have my mom's aluminum one too, with the glass bottom. That cake sounds wonderful. Please do share the recipe. thanks! Happy VTT!

Ooh that cake looks yummy! I definitely want the recipe! I love how the cake saver says "cake" on it. Right to the point, eh? I had that same egg poacher. My grandmother gave it to me when I moved into my first apartment. I didn't have the heart to tell her I hated poached eggs, lol. :) Thanks for sharing, happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteI love your spun aluminum cake pan and cover! and the egg poacher made me smile-- my mother had an identical one!
ReplyDeleteMy grandma kept a similar cake carrier on top of her fridge, always full of homemade cookies.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet a new blogger like myself. I remember the cake plate & egg poacher. Going to get the map to see where Randolph County is.
ReplyDeleteoh how special. I am sure you will take care of them as she did. they don't make things to last like that now. she is wise to have simply taken care of what she already had :)
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing!

My Mom had a cake dome like that one, only it had a carved wooden acorn for a handle.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear about the cake. It looks delicious.
I hope you can join me Tuesday for Tuesday Trivia Tie-in, where we all share our treasures and tell about them.
